The most famous and presumably oldest drug baron in Spain has died, writes MTI.

According to Spanish media reports referring to family members and officials, the 89-year-old is 89 years old Manuel Charlín He died on his New Year’s Eve at his residence in Vilanova de Arousa, after a visit to a pub when his heart fell and stopped.

The “drug grandfather” from Spain’s northwestern province of Galicia ruled a clan called Los Charlínes, one of Europe’s largest drug smugglers, covering many European countries with drugs from South America. It smuggled large quantities of cocaine from Colombia to Galicia, mainly aboard cargo ships.

He spent 20 years in prison, including for drug smuggling and money laundering, and was last released in 2010. He has been charged with several murders, but these have not been proven.

Charlín and his alleged accomplices, including his four children and two grandchildren, are still under investigation and are now being stopped for his death as a drug baron.
