The new year 2022 has started in China under several severe restrictions, which were adopted due to the coronavirus pandemic, although the country recorded only 166 new cases of Covid in the last daily report, a very small number compared to the figures on international plan.

Several Chinese cities have canceled fireworks and a number of major festivities, including in Beijing, Nanjing and Wuhan, the city where the new coronavirus was first detected in late 2019, DPA reports.

Due to China’s highest infection rate in 21 months, Xi’an, the capital of northwestern Shaanxi Province, is currently in a total lockdown, with 13 million residents allowed to leave their homes.

China continues its policy of “zero tolerance” for Covid

Although the numbers of new coronavirus infections are very low compared to internationally reported levels, with a total of 166 confirmed infections in the last 24 hours, the Chinese government continues its policy of “zero tolerance” for COVID-19.

Western-style New Year’s Eve, which is marked on the night of December 31 to January 1, is not an important holiday for the Chinese.

According to the traditional monthly calendar, Chinese New Year will be celebrated only in February. Authorities in the country are then expecting a major wave of travel, as hundreds of millions of Chinese will travel across the country to visit their families.

However, significant travel restrictions are forecast for 2022 due to the tense situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
