British Prime Minister Boris Johnson called the anniversary of the Brexito Treaty a success for his country and his government. “Our challenge since then has been to strengthen the strengths of Brexito so that we can be a modern, dynamic and independent country,” Johnson said in a statement issued late Friday night.

Britain left the EU at the end of January 2020 and withdrew from the EU Customs Union and internal market on 1 January 2021. According to many British experts and politicians, the move has hurt the UK.

Instead of free movement and unrestricted immigration, we now have a migration system that attracts the brightest minds, Johnson said. Ambitious trade agreements have been signed with many countries. “We have ensured the fastest vaccination campaign in Europe, avoiding complicated EU procedures,” he said. Britain has finally abolished “insanely complex EU excise duties on wine and beer”. “We are abandoning EU rules and bureaucracy and bringing common sense back into our regulatory system,” Johnson said.

He stressed that the work is not yet complete. “In the new year, my government will take further and faster steps to deliver on Brexito’s promise and unleash the enormous potential of our new freedoms,” he said.
