At least twelve people died at a Hindu temple on Saturday in Indian-administered Kashmir, the BBC reports. The tragedy occurred at the church of Mata Vaishno Devi. The sanctuary is visited daily by tens of thousands of pilgrims, but on the occasion of the new year, quite a lot more people gathered than allowed. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed regret over the tragedy.

According to some reports, 14 were injured, but that number could be even higher. Witnesses said the crowd was not properly controlled, which could have led to the tragedy. The shrine near the city of Katra is one of the most recognized places of pilgrimage in India. However, due to the epidemic, the number of visitors was limited to 25,000.

The authorities ordered an investigation into the case. Similar tragedies are not uncommon in India aljazeera notes that there have been a number of similar incidents in recent years. In October 2016, at least 24 people died on the outskirts of Varanasi. And in 2013, in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, more than 110 people died in similar circumstances, mostly women and children.
