On Thursday, Bangladeshi authorities reserved a 150-meter stretch of beach in the city of Cox’s Bazar for women and children only. The decision to segregate the beach was to result from requests made to the authorities by women. A few hours later, this idea was withdrawn.

“(The women) asked for a stretch of beach just for them because they felt embarrassed and insecure in a crowded place.” – reported a senior city official, Abu Sufjan.

Critics accused the authorities of favoring radical Islamistswho have recently held demonstrations demanding gender segregation in the workplace. Beach segregation named “Talibistan”, referring to the laws implemented in Afghanistan by the Taliban.

In Bangladesh, considered a conservative country, the dominant religion is Islam.

The beach at Cox’s Bazar on the shores of the Bay of Bengal is a tourist attraction and the longest sandy beach in the world. It is 125 km long.
