At least 12 people died and more than a dozen were injured in a riot at a Hindu shrine in Kashmir this Saturday morning.

According to information from the local police, the victims were devotees who made pilgrimages to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine for the New Year celebrations.

Senior police officer Mukesh Singh confirmed the deaths and, he said, all the injured were hospitalized.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lamented the deaths and said a high-level inquiry had been launched.

“Extremely saddened by the loss of life due to a stampede in Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan,” the prime minister said in a message of condolences.
