North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has said that the collapsing economy will be a national priority in 2022 and that the country is facing a “great struggle for life and death.”
Kim gave a speech at the end of a key ruling party meeting, which also coincided with the 10th anniversary of his coming to power.
A self-imposed blockade with the coronavirus crisis has led to a food shortage in North Korea.
In his speech, Kim did not mention the United States or South Korea directly.
Kim Jong-un said that the main task is to develop and improve people’s living standards.
He admitted the “tough situation” of 2021 and settled down “An important task to make radical progress in solving the problem of food, clothing and housing for people”, announced the official North Korean news agency (KCNA), quoted by BBC.
Kim said the fight against the pandemic is one of the main goals for next year: “Efforts to prevent the epidemic should become a top priority in state work.”
But he also said that Pyongyang would continue to strengthen its defense capabilities due to an increasingly unstable military environment on the Korean peninsula.
Kim Jong-un spoke on Friday at the end of the party’s fourth plenary session, which began on Monday.
Earlier this year, there were several reports that people in North Korea were starving. The country’s borders have been closed since January 2020 to prevent the spread of Covid-19 from China.
