As of January 4, 2022, any phones or tablets that run their own BlackBerry software – that is, BlackBerry 7.1 or a newer version of the BlackBerry 10 or its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet operating system – “will no longer work reliably,” the company says.
The BlackBerry press release states that “either the operator’s connections or Wi-Fi connections will no longer work reliably, including data, phone calls, SMS, and 9-1-1 functionality.”
If you or someone close to you is still using an original BlackBerry, then we recommend switching to another smartphone. For fans, the closest solution is BlackBerry devices running Android, which will continue to work normally.
