Portugal recorded, on the last day of the year, 23,290 more cases of infection and 21 deaths from covid-19. According to the epidemiological bulletin of the Directorate-General of Health (DGS) released this Saturday, the total number of fatalities thus rises to 18,976 and the total number of infected since the beginning of the pandemic is 1,412,396.

During the last four days, Portugal consecutively beat the maximum number of daily cases registered in the pandemic, reaching, on Thursday, more than 30,000 cases of infection, a trend that was finally broken this Friday.

The status report indicates that there are now 1023 covid-19 patients in hospitals, one less than in the previous update. In intensive care there are three fewer patients, out of a total of 142.

There are a further 5758 patients recovered, out of a total of 1,197,737 recoveries since the start of the pandemic. There are over 17,511 active cases, which means that 196,223 Portuguese are still dealing with the disease.
