The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) recommended this Friday (31) the suspension of cruise travel on the Brazilian coast. “The data available so far indicate that the Ômicron variant has the potential to spread faster than other variants and that it may bypass some of the immunological protection of vaccines and previous cases of Covid-19,” the agency said in a statement.

Anvisa also mentioned an alert made on Thursday (30) by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at the highest possible level, “which reflects the increase in cases on board cruise ships since the identification of the variant Ômicron”.

The recommendation comes after the interruption of the trips of the Costa Diadema, which was berthed in Salvador (BA), and of the MSC Splendida, which is in the Port of Santos (SP); both recorded an outbreak of contamination on board. The decision on the suspension of all voyages by ship on the coast will be up to the Ministries of Health, Justice and Public Security and Infrastructure.
