From the beginning of the competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Piotr Żyła was doing very well, he was fourth and second in the training sessions, and in Friday’s qualifications he confirmed his excellent disposition. Żyła showed the longest jump in the entire competition. The distance of 138.5 m allowed him to take the fifth place. Marcus Eisenbichler triumphed in qualifying, beating Ryoyu Kobayashi and Karl Geiger.
After the disastrous performance in Obersdorf, the red light was lit again in the Polish team and the scenario of withdrawing the players from further competition in the Four Hills Tournament was seriously considered. However, training and qualifications in Garmisch-Partenkirchen gave hope that the Poles would bounce back, because for the first time this season, Michał Doleżal’s pupils received a pass to participate in the competition.
In the trial series before the New Year’s competition in Garmisch-Panterkirchen, the best one was Helvor Egner Granerud, who soared at a distance of 136 m. The Norwegian defeated Markus Einsenbichler and Karl Geiger, who landed at 134 m and 135 m respectively. In the last attempt before the competition, Żyła left again after myself a great impression. In his jump he got 133 m and was fifth and finally eighth.
Our other representatives did much worse. Kamil Stoch landed on 124.5 m and took 17th place. Very similar distances were achieved by Dawid Kubacki (121.5 m), Paweł Wąsek (120.5 m) and Jakub Wolny (120.5 m), who took 24th, 36th and 40th place respectively. The worst Pole this time was Andrzej Stękała. 116.5 m allowed him to take the 47th position.
