The losses of Polish culture during World War II are estimated at 514,000. objects, half a million works of art and 22 million volumes. – We recover a work of art practically every week – reminds the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Culture and National Heritage prof. Piotr Gliński. But, as she adds, it is still a drop in the ocean.

Lost recovery

– The situation is a bit dramatic, but of those 64 thousand we recover a work of art practically every week. It is still a drop in the ocean – said Prof. Piotr Gliński at the beginning of December last year, on the occasion of handing over the recovered one to the Wawel Royal Castle after years of Leon Wyczółkowski’s painting “Rural girl in a yellow scarf”.

At that time, the deputy prime minister announced the transformation, from 2022, of the Department for the Restitution of Cultural Goods (operating in the Department of Cultural Heritage Abroad and War Losses) into a department dealing with the recovery of lost and missing cultural goods.
