Sputnik – Brazil, United Arab Emirates, Albania, Ghana and Gabon are the new non-permanent members of the UN Security Council. The countries were chosen for the 2022-2023 biennium in a vote by the United Nations General Assembly on June 11th. They will replace Vietnam, Niger, Tunisia, Estonia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines as non-permanent members.

India, Mexico, Norway, Ireland and Kenya remain in office, elected as non-permanent members for 2021-2022.

This is the 11th time that Brazil has received a seat on the UN Security Council. Ghana and Gabon have already been non-permanent members three times each, while the UAE will join the body for the second time. Albania is the only newcomer.

According to Itamaraty, Brazil will endeavor to “translate into tangible contributions the defense of peace and the peaceful settlement of disputes, among other principles enshrined in the Constitution of 1988 and in the Charter of the United Nations”.

As already stated by the Russian Foreign Ministry, Moscow is ready to cooperate closely with the new members of the body, which aims to “address the challenges and threats in the field of international peace and security”.

Russia is one of the five permanent member countries of the council, along with the United States, England, France and China.
