STF determines and government will have to explain consultation on vaccination in children

Carmen Lúcia, Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), instituted that the President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro, and the Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, provide clarifications on the act that determined the holding of a public consultation on vaccination against Covid- 19 in children aged five to 11 years.

In the document, Carmen Lúcia established that the information must be provided within a period of five days, regardless of the period of recess of the judiciary.

The Extraordinary Department for Confronting Covid-19 (Secovid/MS), linked to the Ministry of Health, determined that a public consultation be held, between 12/23 and 1/2/2022, on the vaccination of this group.

However, the National Confederation of Metallurgical Workers (CNTM) questions Secovid’s act.

In the text, the STF minister claims that, even after 600,000 deaths and studies accepted worldwide, including the recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the authorization of the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) to use the vaccine Comirnaty (Pfizer/Wyeth), the Executive Branch intends to “postpone the imposition of vaccines on the population between five and 11 years old on the pretext of wanting to hear the population about it”.

In the understanding of the STF rapporteur, the situation is serious and endangers the lives and health of children and adolescents, as well as the entire population.

The text “emphasizes that Anvisa’s recommendations go towards the urgent immunization of children and adolescents not only for the individual benefits that the immunizing agent will bring to such population, but also for the beneficial impact that the entire community will experience as a result of it, so that Public consultation, subsidized precisely in the approval of vaccination by the agency (that is, a measure that is already scientifically and technically supported), only serves to delay vaccination and, therefore, is harmful to our entire society.”

According to the minister, what is intended “is not to pay for human lives or compromised people’s integrity for the proven and predictable neglect or wrongdoing of state decisions.”

That said, Carmen Lúcia ordered the request for information from the state agents involved to clarify the confederation’s questioning. Then, he asked for the opinion of the attorney general of the Union and the attorney general of the republic.
