Acts of granting city rights were given on Thursday by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. As the head of the government noted, these localities went through various crises related to the troubles of the Polish state.

– Many of today’s villages that become cities today have been punished. It was the Russian Tsar’s punishment after the January Uprising related to support for the insurgents who then threatened the Russian Empire. This punishment was the withdrawal of city rights, pointed out the head of government.

The tsar took their town rights

Among the ten towns that obtained municipal rights, eight regained them after more than 150 years. In 1867, Pruszcz lost its city status. Two years later, as a result of the Tsar’s decision, Izbica, Cegłów and Iwaniska became the town. In 1870, Lutomiersk, Bolimów, Nowe Miasto and Olsztyn in the Silesian Province ceased to be the cities.

The municipal authorities tell us that the decision to apply for the granting of the municipal certificate was mainly due to the 150th anniversary of the loss of status.

– We decided that this is the right moment to conduct public consultations and submit a request for their recovery. The main factor influencing the restoration of the city’s status was the opinion of the local community. 1,446 people took part in the consultations, 994 people were in favor of granting municipal rights to the town – explains the mayor of the Lutomiersk commune.

According to the deputy mayor of the Bolimów commune, regaining the city’s status is a kind of historical compensation.

– Analyzing the rich history of the town of Bolimów, its best years fall in the period of urban history, therefore we count on an additional development impulse for the inhabitants of Bolimów and the entire commune – he adds.

A similar opinion is shared by the steward of the Olsztyn commune in the province. Silesian.

– Olsztyn was granted city rights by King Kazimierz Jagiellończyk in 1488, and he was taken by the Tsar of Russia in 1870 for the participation of the inhabitants in the January Uprising. Regaining city rights is for us a duty and historical and historical justice – comments Tomasz Kucharski, mayor of the commune. Olsztyn.

– Efforts to restore town rights for Iwaniska have been going on for over 20 years. Throughout all these years, there was no such climate that would allow for the successful conduct of this procedure and historical justice – adds Marek Staniek, the mayor of the Iwaniska commune.

Urban status = challenge and development

The mayor of the Iwaniska commune also noted that the regaining of municipal rights is not only about the historical, cultural or historical justice, but also about the development of the village.

– I think it is an ennoblement, a drive to better build the economy. Many investors are already asking when we will be a city. And if investors come, there will be more companies and jobs in them – explains the head of the commune head.

As Patryk Kołosowski emphasizes in an interview with Onet, Bolimów will be the first city in the Skierniewice poviat.

– The granting of municipal rights will be sealed by the revitalization of the town center with a traditional rectangular square. The change in the status of the village is also to cause social changes among the “Bolimów townspeople” who will undertake new business initiatives and become more involved in the functioning of the commune – he says.

In Olsztyn, they will continue to use rural and European Union programs.

– We count on this money a lot. We want to develop as a tourist and recreational commune. We focus on this type of activity because we have poor soil and few people are employed in agriculture. We intend to develop infrastructure, raise money for both villages and cities – explains the head of the Olsztyn commune.
