Calisto Tanzi, Italian businessman and founder of the dairy multinational Parmalat, died last Saturday (1st/1). According to news agencies, the cause of death was pneumonia.

The businessman became famous in Italy for taking Parmalat from a small family business to a global giant in the food sector, especially in the dairy sector.

Tanzi was also highlighted by one of Italy’s biggest tax scandals. In 2003, a financial gap of 14.5 billion euros was identified in the company’s balance sheet, which led to bankruptcy and a collapse for more than 150,000 small investors.

The Italian was sentenced in December 2010 to 17 years and five months in prison for fraudulent bankruptcy. Parmalat currently belongs to the French group Lactalis.
