the british tennis player Emma Raducanu, current US Open champion, has announced that she will not participate in the WTA Melbourne tournament, which runs from January 3-9, a warm-up competition for the Australia Open, to fully recover from coronavirus.
“The time to compete in Melbourne this week is very tight for me,” admitted 19-year-old Raducanu, who has just come out of isolation.
After testing positive for the coronavirus in December in the UAE, the British had to withdraw from the exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi.
The young tennis player would return to the courts this Tuesday in Australia, alongside Japanese Naomi Osaka and Romanian Simona Halep. Raducanu still hopes to return “at the end of the month”, with the Australian Open starting on January 17th.
Finalist at Roland Garros in 2021, Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova will also not be at the Melbourne tournament after testing positive for covid-19 earlier this week, casting doubt on her participation in the Australian Open.
